More than 700,000 Americans will have a stroke — or brain attack — this year, and 160,000 cases will be fatal. Through prevention, education and sophisticated treatment, the Brain Attack/Stroke Program at Memorial Hospital West is working to lower these numbers. Advanced technology and neurointerventional medicine can vastly improve a patient’s chances of recovering from a stroke with fewer complications.
A brain attack is like a heart attack: While a heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is interrupted and the heart is deprived of oxygen, a brain attack occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted and the brain is deprived of oxygen. Quickly restoring blood flow to the affected area of the brain is vital in minimizing the long-term effects of stroke and reducing complications.
Memorial’s Brain Attack/Stroke Programs at Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Regional Hospital have earned certification as Primary Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the nation’s predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare. JCAHO’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on recommendations for Primary Stroke Centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association.
Memorial Hospital West, certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), has a Brain Attack Team available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide immediate treatment for brain attacks. The team includes emergency medical services personnel, as well as acute-stroke experts and nurses certified by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to treat stroke patients with neurointerventional techniques.
