Memorial Neuroscience Center at Memorial Hospital West

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

Memorial Hospital West’s Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Services are provided by healthcare professionals who are focused on helping patients after surgery, or acute illness or injury. Partnering with Memorial Neuroscience Center’s physicians and nurses, this multidisciplinary team works to help patients reach optimal health, functional independence and quality of life. In addition, Family-Centered Care approach emphasizes the role of family in the rehabilitation of a patient, and therefore includes educational programs for patients and their loved ones.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists work with patients who, because of illness, injury, or developmental or psychological impairment, need specialized skills training to lead independent and productive lives. Occupational therapists help patients resume their daily routines by teaching them how to groom and dress themselves, as well as how to cook and perform work-related tasks. Training also helps with hand rehabilitation and the enhancement of fine motor skills.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapists can help prevent the onset and progression of physical impairments, functional limitations and disabilities, as well as address changes in a patient’s health status after injury, illness or disease. A physical therapist will begin the recovery process by working with the patient while he or she is in the hospital. Services include the evaluation and treatment of impairments, and education on how to prevent further impairments.

Speech Language Pathology and Audiology

Speech and language pathologists provide assessments and therapy for patients of all ages who exhibit deficits and/or delays in communication, articulation and cognition (memory). Our therapists also utilize the latest technology, including electrical stimulation, to enhance and promote swallowing.

Social Services

Special services can assist with the various emotional and social issues associated with a neurological illness, disorder or injury. Available to patients and their families, these social services help individuals obtain the maximum benefit from rehabilitation.

Stroke Unit

Staffed by specially trained nurses certified by the National Institutes of Health, the Stroke Unit assesses and monitors patients who have experienced stroke, stabilizing them until they are able to enter rehabilitation or return home. The program also offers a variety of social services and support groups for patients and their families.
