Family Birthplace and Childbirth Class Descriptions

Family Birthplace Expectations

A Grandmother's Shower

This fun, interactive event encourages ways to become more involved with your Grandbaby, and through sharing of education and experiences illustrates how interested grandmothers can provide knowledgeable support to the mothers of their grandbabies. Fun games, activities and discussion hosted by an IBCLC and Grandmother! Presented in both English and Spanish.
Location: Joe DiMaggio Family Resource Center

Baby Care Class

Current information for expectant parents on basic baby care, crib safety, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) prevention, signs of illness, and bonding pointers. Teaches how babies look and act, and discusses when to call a pediatrician with concerns. 
Fee: $20 per couple

Babysitting Basics

Designed for youth age 11 through 15, this class teaches skills to to help prepare them to care for infants and children safely. A parent must sign a permission form for the youth to participate. An adult must accompany the youth to class. 
Fee: $20 per child

Breastfeeding Class

Provides current information and tips to help make the early days of breastfeeding a positive experience for new mothers and their infants. Dads and grandparents are welcome and encouraged to come. Breastfeeding class should be taken before the baby arrives.
Fee: $20 per couple

Cesarean Childbirth

This childbirth class provides information for parents-to-be about cesarean sections. Includes information on when a cesarean section is indicated, anesthesia used, and what to expect during the procedure. Information on postsurgery recovery and care will be included. A Family Birthplace orientation will complete the class. This class is appropriate for anyone who is having a repeat cesarean section or for a first-time mother who expects to have a cesarean section childbirth.

Coping With Your New Addition

Having a new baby can add many challenges to your daily life. This class covers time management, stress management and other issues that many new parents face. This can be taken before or after the baby is born.
Fee: $20 per couple

For Those Who Want More

For those who have completed a childbirth class. Emphasis is placed on relaxation and comfort measures. Mom is encouraged to bring her labor coach.
Fee:No charge if a Prepared Childbirth class has been completed at a Memorial Healthcare System hospital (Regional, West or Miramar). $20 for all others

Grandparents Class

Addresses the special contribution grandparents make in the lives of their grandchildren. Includes how things have changed since their own children were born and provides current information on childbirth, baby care and baby safety. Grandparents are encouraged to attend CPR classes as well. 
Fee: $20 per couple

Infant CPR

This class is for all parents, family and friends who take care of infants. Follows American Heart Association's "CPR for Family and Friends." Not suitable for those who require a certification for employment. Safety and accident prevention are included, as well as how to put in a car seat.

Infant Massage

An infant massage therapist will teach you how to massage your infant. This has been shown to enhance the bonding process, diminish colic, and lead to healthy development of the baby. This class is appropriate for infants 7 weeks to 7 months old. Fee includes book and massage oil. Please bring your baby and a towel or pad to the class.

Hospital Orientation

This orientation to the Family Birthplace discusses hospital policies and procedures. We will show you where to park, where to enter the hospital, and how to be admitted. 
Fee: No Charge

Mommy and Me Baby Cakes Tea Party

A local, informal group gathering of like-minded new moms and their babies which offers support, friendship, activities and parenting tips. With guest speakers on topics of interest as well as "mom led" discussion, it is fun and informative for moms and babies! Held once a month.
Location: Joe DiMaggio Family Resource Center, 1005 Joe DiMaggio Drive (N 35 Ave), Hollywood Florida 33021.

Nursing Mothers Support Group

An ongoing support group to provide breastfeeding assistance and encouragement from other moms and our board-certified lactation consultants.

Parenting Counts Program

The parent-child relationship is one of the most essential factors in a child's overall development. In this program expectant parents learn successful parenting through four pillars of development: Physical and brain development, Social and Emotional Development, and Communication and Language Development. One Day Workshop.

Prenatal Infant Massage Class

This class is designed to be taken before the baby's birth for parents to learn the simple, important strokes of Infant Massage for baby calming, attachment, and infant development. Dolls are used and a booklet is included.
Offered once every other month.
Fee: $10 per couple

Prepared Childbirth

Provides you with current information about late pregnancy, labor and postpartum. This childbirth class includes relaxation, comfort measures and breathing technique practice to help prepare you for your labor, so be sure to bring two pillows and a blanket. Information about epidurals, medications, episiotomies and C-sections will be included so you can make informed choices. The Prepared Childbirth classes are presented in several different ways with various days and times to help meet your needs. Offered as a three-week series in the evening or as a one-day "marathon" on a weekend. A hospital orientation is included. Mom is encouraged to bring her labor coach.
Fee: $50 per couple

These childbirth refresher classes give updated information about labor for those who have given birth before. Includes limited practice on breathing techniques and comfort measures, so be sure to bring two pillows and a blanket. A hospital orientation is included. Mom is encouraged to bring her labor coach.

Sibling Class

A variety of fun interactive activities to help prepare children for the arrival of a baby in the family. Appropriate for children age 3 through 8. Each child is encouraged to bring a doll. Parents should plan to stay with the child.

Class Fees

The Memorial Hospital West Childbirth Classes and Family Birthplace Education fees are minimal. Our goal is to provide accurate, up-to-date information to the community concerning pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting within a price range affordable to everyone.

If the price of the class is still a concern for you, please call to discuss it with us at (954) 844-7110. Payment for classes must be made at least two weeks before the scheduled class to reserve your spot. Payment must be made in check or money order. You will receive a confirmation letter with instructions on where to send the payment.
